Devshayani Ekadashi is one of the most important Ekadashi’s during the calendar year. According ti the Puranas, God is said to take rest in Kshir Saagar on this day. After 4 months he comes out from Kshir Saagar. This day is Probodhina Ekadashi day, again a very important Ekadashi day.
Whilst the Lord is taking rest it is therefore important that we remain that much more spiritually awaken and therefore it is time of practicing and displaying that much more devotion and faith in God.
Those who do Vrata, Japa, Tapa, Niyam, Upavas etc during these four months of Chaturmaas attain greater fruits for such penance. Therefore such time is considered the purest and most favourable. Therefore Shreeji Maharaj has stipulated additional niyams to be taken during these months in Shikshapatri (76-78). Shreeji Maharaj himself performed great austerities during Chaturmaas at Pulhasram, thus setting an example for all.
